Health and Social Impact

Health Impact Assessments (HIA) are used to judge the potential health effects of a policy, programme or project on a population, particularly on vulnerable or disadvantaged groups. We are experienced in undertaking HIAs, including integrating health assessments within an Environmental Impact Assessment and undertaking Rapid HIAs, as well as offering a wider range of bespoke services including modelling, assessment and research.

The Impact of Air Pollution

Modelling the health impacts of air pollution from PM2.5 and NO2 may be undertaken for large scale developments, or to inform local authority policy making. Parameters such as life-years lost, deaths, respiratory hospital admissions, and incidence of ischemic heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and asthma in children as a result of air pollutant changes can be calculated.

Research Work

Our research work has included bespoke studies on the implications of an ‘exposure reduction’ approach to address health impacts of PM2.5 on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra); and contributing to a United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) report calling for action to protect children from the impact of air pollution.

Planning Policy

We have also undertaken reviews of the health effects of air pollution, metrics for exposure and the treatment of vulnerable groups in planning policy. In all cases, we aim to provide policy recommendations with practical applications.

Our Health and Social Impact Services

Analysis of health impacts is critical to project, policy and programme decision making, particularly given growing understanding of the critical link between health and the environment. Our services include: Evaluations , Health impact assessments, Models and tools, Research and methods, Policy analysis

HIAs

We are highly experienced in preparing HIAs including stand-alone, rapid and full HIAs and ES Chapters for both commercial and residential developments, as well as projects incorporating extensive modelling of air quality and health impacts.

Policy Analysis and Evaluation

By appraising the health and wellbeing impacts of policy options at local, national and international level, we can support the mitigation of the risks of air and noise pollution. Our analysis follows best practice guidance, often as part of the wider cost-benefit or impact assessment.

Once implemented, our evaluation services assess the real-world impacts of policies and programmes on health and wellbeing.

Research and Tools

We actively engage in collaborative research and knowledge sharing to improve collective understanding of the links between environment and health. Our team includes current members of UK AQEG and COMEAP expert groups.

Alongside this, we develop bespoke, easy to use models and tools to support decision makers to identify, assess and monetise health and wellbeing impacts.

“Our scientific understanding enables us to integrate better air quality into development designs — not as an afterthought, but from the very start.”

Director of Air Quality Modelling and Assessment
